Note that, as with all diphthongs in English, we mark length on the first element of the diphthong because, in longer realizations, it tends to be the first element that is drawn out.

Figure 12.12 shows a spectrogram of the vowel /ou/ (GA pronunciation) and the vowel /sʊ/ (RP pronunciation) in the word “sew.” Again, note how the formants change from the early to the late part of the vowel. Table 12.6 gives typical values for Fl and F2 of this vowel in men and women taken from Cruttenden (2001). The values are given for both the initial and final components of the diphthong.
